AKJE's Report

THE REALM OF SOCIALITY: NOTES ON THE DESIGN OF SOCIAL SOFTWARE

What are the issues you found more innovative in reading Bouman et al. (2007)?
The way in which sociality conceptualize design environment to social software systems, as well as the proposal of the four domains of design:
·         The realm of enabling practice.
·         The realm of mimicking reality.
·         The realm of building identity
·         The realm of actualizing self

Last.fm case, I find it interesting how they use the information gathered by the tools provided to users to provide new services and encourage interaction among participants.

Twitter.com case, technically speaking, a system message routing platform independent scale; His proposal is to be a global community of friends and strangers who invite the world to let them know what they are doing. It's interesting how motivates people to interact in an informal and apparently disorderly sociability confirming that cannot be designed as the authors state in their research.

Cases LinkedIn - Friendster: I find them to be interesting analyses regarding the theme and content driven by both social networking sites because I really think we are so involved in using such tools often do not analyze the actual target application you might think they are so similar but by reading this article personally, I now understand the potential of these tools and their impact on society and the sense in these tools, as well as technology developers who must take into account not only the technical but rather the social.

With the research presented in the article, it seems important to note that the change of mentality of the function of the mechanisms that trigger social behavior is important to understand how people explore their social environment using social software tools. Another interesting point is the four design domains identified by researchers for the design of social software, yet would still be interesting to know to what extent should incorporate each of the domains to create social software.

Do you understand Wenger's (1988) claim that "Sociality cannot be designed; it can only be designed for"?

Not very clear to me, but I think maybe means that you cannot design the way people socialize but if the tools you can use to interact using the real-life experience.

Look at the list of references in the bibliography. Are you familiar with the System Theory sources they cite?

No, I really did not think there was a very broad field of study regarding the use of social software systems.

What do you think of having blogs as references in this work?

I think he brings great value on the reliability of the sites or blogs, and are backed by experts in the subject, but in Mexico by the cultural issue I think we're not used to this kind of references because I think we have not understood so clearly the importance of these tools to provide reliable knowledge.

Did you visit any of those blogs?

I had not visited, these tools do not really appeal to me much attention, perhaps due to misuse are given in Mexico, however after reading the article and understand what all the theory's design behind these tools caught my attention and I started to visit sites that are in the references section.
